Effective technology and authoring tools need to envision and implement product design systems that will satisfy long term requirements.

The effective authoring and technology tools of 2008 will consist of KBE, Generative Checking, highly specific tool capabilities, advanced viewing, simulation, and enterprise configuration management.

The futuristic tool will in fact be a suite of tools that are aligned and integrated through 1) a common set of standards, and 2) a gateway that will provide a common and complete view of product and process definitions.

Several steps must be completed effectively realize the vision:

The enterprise must agree on a single product definition capable of describing the product for its complete life cycle

A data model must be established that enables enterprise-wide product definition, viewing, and management

Technology tools need to facilitate the presentation of the data model to the user

VEMS provides the enablers and facilitators to the solution today.
