Data Exchange
One of
the core strategies of VEMS is the ability to manage harness definition
content across different authoring and technology tools.
Harness objects can be defined in the VEMS data manager and inform (exchange
data with) the authoring tool at any level of the product definition process.
Authoring and technology tools can inform the VEMS data manager of new
or updated harness objects. At no time is a complete harness definition
required. In fact, VEMS' infrastructure is designed to capture definition
from individual authoring tools and manage both the design and life cycle
of the harness.
Two issues typically arise with data exchange: graphical representation
and logical representation.
Graphical representation problems fall into two categories: native authoring
tool symbol management and consistent replication of data. Data items
managed by VEMS can have associated native authoring tool representations
stored with the object. Users have the option of using the VEMS representation
or native tool library representations. To address consistent replication
issues, VEMS associates each graphical object both physically and logically
allowing connectivity and spatial associations.
Logical representation is not often addressed in data exchange tasks.
A core strategy of VEMS is to exchange any and all logical information
to the authoring tool as realistically possible. Object and system attributes and
relations are maintained between VEMS and the authoring tools.
VEMS' data exchange capabilities range from Systems Engineering
to Simulation and Prototype. Since VEMS uses Standards based proprietary
and open formats, there is no need for flavored translators. The VEMS
Data Exchange and Collaboration suite use the same file format.
VEMS' integration uses native authoring and technology tool environments
mapped to STEP (ISO 10303) standards.
